The person who quotes the job is the person who does it.

I am Alex Example, and Example Trade Co. is just me. I take on the work that has to be done properly rather than the work that has to be done today, and I am the one who turns up, quotes it and does it.

Most weeks that is a few small repairs, a replacement or two and one bigger job booked in. I keep room in the week for the hour long jobs, so a small thing does not have to wait a month.

The first look costs nothing, and so does the quote that follows it. Ring and describe it, or send a photo.

I stand behind what I do, with no fixed number of years attached to that. If something I worked on goes wrong, I come back and look at it.

Something that has stopped working

The part that failed gets replaced, not everything around it. Half the time it turns out to be a loose fitting or a worn connection, and I will tell you that rather than charge you for more.

When a thing is past repairing, it comes out and a new one goes in, matched to what is already there so the rest of it is left alone.

A one off piece made to fit

Measured where it has to go and made to suit that, rather than a standard size pushed in and packed out. Small pieces are usually done inside a week.

A job at your place

Tell me what the work is, where it is and roughly when suits. I turn up with what the job needs and finish it in one visit wherever that is possible.

A bigger job, quoted first

Anything where the size of the work is not clear until somebody stands in front of it. I look, write it down, and you have the number before a thing is touched.

Quoted first

Something else entirely. Ring and describe it in whatever words you have. Most jobs fit somewhere on that list, and if yours does not, I will say so and tell you who to ring instead.

What it costs

Every figure here includes GST. Nothing on this page turns into a surprise at the bottom of an invoice.

Looking at it and telling you what I think

No charge. Ring and describe it, or send a photo. If it is not worth doing, you hear that here, before anybody has spent anything.

Finding out exactly what is wrong

$90. Some jobs cannot be priced until they are opened up and looked at properly. That charge comes off the bill if the work goes ahead, and if it turns out it cannot be put right, it is all that is owed.

The work itself

One number. Agreed in writing before anything starts. Where the size of the job is genuinely unknown, it is billed by time against a ceiling we set first, and I ring you before it gets near.

Some jobs are not worth doing. I will say so plainly, and tell you what I would do if it were mine.

If it is still under warranty, go back to whoever sold it to you. That cover is worth using first.

Sorted or not, you get everything back, including the parts that came out.

Who you are dealing with

There is no crew and no office. That means I can only take on so much at once, and the standard of the work is entirely down to me. It also means the person who quotes your job is the person standing there doing it.

If a job needs another trade I get someone in I trust and keep them to a date, but my part of it stays mine from the first measurement to the last check. Ask me anything, however basic it sounds. I would rather answer a question twice than have you nod along and find out later.
